QATAR – Saad Bin Ali Kharji, Chairman of Qatar Tourism Authority has revealed the country welcomed 3.2 million visitors in August 2024, a 26% increase from the same period last year.
The chairman made the revelation during the World Tourism Day 2024 celebrations in Doha on September 27. He acknowledged tourism is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the country’s economy. He described the sector as a ‘catalyst for transformation.’
He attributed the performance of the tourism sector to the leadership of Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and how he spearheaded the management and marketing of both Qatar Airways and the country as a whole as a preferred tourist destination.
The chairman also hailed the recently unveiled Third National Development Strategy for 2024-2030, describing it as a testament to the Amir’s commitment to spearhead the country to the next phase of economic development.
Ali Kharji said, “Among its key focus areas, the strategy highlights the tourism sector as a pivotal component in the country’s economic diversification efforts, crucial for driving sustainable economic growth.”
The Chairman reiterated the August visit data reinforces Qatar’s position as one of the fastest-growing tourism destinations in the world.
He expressed confidence the country is well on its way to achieving its targeted visitor count of 6 million by the end of 2030 and increasing the sector’s contribution to Qatar’s GDP from 7% to 12%.
Ali Kharji also highlighted the importance of the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector which he reiterates plays an important role in tourism growth.
The Chairman revealed the Board has put in place plans to leverage the country’s 128 venues providing 70,000 square meters of exhibition space for major international events such as the Web Summit and the Geneva International Motor Show Qatar.
He also hailed the Qatar International Food Festival (QIFF), now in its 13th year, as a testament to the country’s commitment to showcasing diverse culinary traditions and fostering cross-cultural engagement.
The Chairman concluded, “Our mission is to advance and enhance Qatar’s tourism sector by leveraging our rich cultural heritage, developing innovative attractions, and delivering unique experiences for both residents and visitors.”
