TANZANIA – The Zanzibar government has unveiled plans to position itself as a leading destination for halal tourism in East Africa through a strategic revision of its tourism policy to attract tourists from the Middle East and other Islamic countries.

The initiative was unveiled at the Zanzibar Tourism and Investment Show, which took place from October 25-26 and attracted over 250 international stakeholders. The event highlighted Zanzibar’s potential for tourism investment and development.

Tourism Minister Mudrik Soraga announced plans to revise the tourism policy to include halal-friendly services. These services will consist of alcohol-free hotels, gender-segregated facilities, and designated prayer rooms.

President Hussein Mwinyi underscored the goal of this initiative, which is to create an inclusive environment for all visitors while honoring Islamic principles.

He stated,We aim to make Zanzibar a place where everyone can enjoy their holiday or conference peacefully, regardless of their religion, ethnicity, or background.

The exhibition’s main objectives were to promote Zanzibar as a key tourism destination, connect industry stakeholders, and highlight available investment opportunities on the island.

Zanzibar’s Stone Town, known for its unique blend of Arab, Persian, British, and Indian architectural influences, is expected to draw cultural tourists.

The island’s rich Swahili heritage, which dates back to the 1698 Omani Sultanate, is particularly appealing to visitors from Islamic countries.

The President emphasized the resonance of this Swahili heritage gives the island a unique tourism advantage in attracting tourists from the Middle East and the Muslim world.

In an effort to capitalize on its historical and cultural wealth, the Zanzibar government is inviting both local and international tourism companies to invest in and promote halal products and services, targeting primarily Islamic states.

Halal tourism caters specifically to Muslim families by providing amenities such as alcohol-free hotels, separate swimming pools and spa facilities, halal dining options, and prayer areas.

President Mwinyi expressed that halal tourism not only allows visitors to enjoy the natural beauty and hospitality of the country but also provides an opportunity to learn about religious practices within the context of Zanzibar’s rich culture and historical legacy.
