ETHIOPIA – Ethiopian Airlines has marked a significant milestone by introducing the Airbus A350-1000 to its fleet, becoming the first airline in Africa to operate this advanced aircraft.
The arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport was celebrated with a grand ceremony, attended by government officials, diplomats, and representatives from Airbus and Thales.
The A350-1000 landed after its journey from Toulouse, France, and was greeted with a water cannon salute.
Adding to the occasion, the delivery included medical supplies valued at over €100,000 (US$ 104,745), donated by Aviation Sans Frontières in partnership with Airbus, showcasing the airline’s commitment to community support.
Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew highlighted the significance of this addition, saying, “This aircraft strengthens our commitment to sustainable aviation in Africa.”
The A350-1000 is designed to enhance passenger experience with features such as larger screens, improved seating arrangements, and Thales’ AVANT Up in-flight entertainment system. A unique landscape camera further elevates the travel experience, offering stunning views from above.
Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, the aircraft’s advanced design includes carbon-fibre materials and aerodynamics that reduce noise and ensure a smoother flight.
These features align with Ethiopian Airlines’ focus on sustainability by improving fuel efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
Business-class passengers are treated to direct aisle access, reflecting the airline’s dedication to comfort and convenience.
The A350-1000 is expected to serve long-haul routes, reinforcing Ethiopian Airlines’ Vision 2035 strategy to position itself as a global leader in aviation.
Growing tourism opportunities
The expansion of Ethiopian Airlines’ fleet coincides with Ethiopia’s broader efforts to boost its tourism and hospitality industries.
The tourism market is projected to generate US$2.26 billion in revenue by 2024, with the hotel sector alone expected to reach US$1 billion in the same period. These figures underscore the country’s growing appeal to international travelers.
Among recent developments, the inauguration of Beynouna Village near Lake Beseka stands out as a significant step in enhancing Ethiopia’s tourism offerings.
Located near Metehara, 200 kilometers east of Addis Ababa, and close to Asebot and Awash National Parks, the village combines eco-tourism with cultural experiences.
The once rugged volcanic landscape has been transformed into a tranquil retreat that highlights Ethiopia’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Accommodations include a traditional wing featuring regional architectural styles and a modern wing with luxurious presidential suites. The site also offers RV options, including a VIP RV for exclusivity.
Beyond accommodations, guests can enjoy a variety of amenities such as spa services, a cinema, and sports facilities, while the 10-hectare farm provides a glimpse into rural Ethiopian life with animals grazing in their natural habitat.
