GLOBAL – Multinational fast food restaurant chain Subway has announced John Chidsey, its global CEO will retire by the end of the year.
Carrie Walsh, currently Subway’s president of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) and former global chief marketing officer (CMO), will temporarily replace John Chidsey as CEO.
Chidsey will transition to a consulting role, focusing on international growth strategies and master franchisee relations to ensure a seamless handover of responsibilities.
Chidsey, who joined Subway in 2019, played a pivotal role in the brand’s extensive transformation. His initiatives have revitalized the menu, improved the customer experience, and driven digital innovation.
Under his leadership, Subway secured over 10,000 commitments for future restaurant openings and is set to more than double the number of new restaurant openings in 2024 compared to 2019.
After serving as CEO for five years, Chidsey expressed his pride in leading Subway through a period of significant change, noting the accomplishments of the team.
He added, “I’ve worked closely with Carrie over the past five years and have seen her deep understanding of what it takes for a global brand to grow and evolve. With her strong commitment to Subway and its franchisees, I am confident that Carrie is the right leader to guide Subway through this transition as we continue to strengthen our position as a leading global restaurant brand.”
Walsh has made substantial contributions to Subway’s brand perception both domestically and globally. As CMO, she played a key role in re-engaging customers and reinforcing Subway’s reputation in the quick-service restaurant and sandwich sectors.
Most recently, as president of EMEA, she oversaw operations across 50 countries and territories.
Walsh, who will continue driving Subway’s growth initiatives as interim CEO, said, “I am honored to step into the role of interim CEO and look forward to advancing key initiatives that enhance franchisee profitability and deliver innovative experiences for our customers.”
“Through collaboration with Subway’s leadership team, employees, and our valued franchisees, we will continue to elevate the Subway experience and bring fresh, quality food to more guests around the world.”
