RWANDA – Rwanda’s presence at the Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix brought its unique tourism offerings into the global spotlight, enhancing the nation’s growing reputation as a travel destination.
At the Losail International Circuit in Doha, Rwanda’s vibrant booth in the F1 FanZone captivated attendees. Visitors were treated to Rwandan coffee and tea, while learning about the country’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and sustainable tourism initiatives.
The delegation, led by Janet Karemera, CEO of the Rwanda Convention Bureau (RCB), highlighted Rwanda’s commitment to offering high-quality tourism experiences.
“Rwanda’s participation underscores our dedication to sharing sustainable tourism with the world,” Karemera stated. She encouraged Formula 1 enthusiasts to explore Rwanda, particularly during the FIA Awards in Kigali this December.
Rwanda’s presence at the Grand Prix was also marked by high-level representation. President Paul Kagame attended alongside the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and other dignitaries, including Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
The event also brought attention to Rwanda’s potential as a future Formula 1 host. Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton voiced strong support, expressing his desire to race in Rwanda before retirement.
“Rwanda is one of my favorite places,” Hamilton said. “It’s amazing that they’re so keen to be part of Formula 1’s future.”
Highlighting Rwanda’s tourism potential
Visitors to the Rwandan booth explored tourism opportunities ranging from gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park to luxury eco-lodges and wildlife safaris.
These offerings reflect Rwanda’s efforts to combine conservation with economic development, creating a model for sustainable tourism.
The “Visit Rwanda” campaign, launched in 2018, has played a pivotal role in this transformation. Tourism revenue increased by 17% in its first year, with European visitor numbers rising by 22%. By 2019, the sector contributed over 10% of Rwanda’s GDP and employed 160,000 people.
Rwanda’s growing role in international sports tourism is part of a broader strategy to strengthen economic and cultural connections worldwide.
Collaborations with global brands like Arsenal Football Club and events like the Qatar Grand Prix have elevated Rwanda’s profile as a travel destination.
The nation’s leadership in sustainable tourism and its ambitious vision continue to attract interest, positioning Rwanda as a dynamic contender for future global events like Formula 1.
