Jumeirah Group ventures into Africa with new luxury offerings

AFRICA – The Jumeirah Group has partnered with the Thanda Group to establish its presence in Africa, unveiling two luxury destinations set to open in December 2024.

This marks a significant milestone in Jumeirah’s global expansion as it ventures into the continent’s thriving luxury travel market.

Located within Tanzania’s Shungimbili Island Marine Reserve, Jumeirah Thanda Island is a private retreat designed for exclusivity.

Accessible by helicopter from Dar es Salaam or a speedboat from Mafia Island, the five-hectare island offers an idyllic escape.

Guests can enjoy a villa featuring five suites and two Swahili-style Bandas that provide direct ocean access. A dedicated culinary team prepares bespoke dining experiences using locally sourced ingredients.

Activities on the island include guided boat trips, diving with turtles, and seasonal whale shark encounters. Additionally, guests can sail aboard traditional dhows to explore nearby islands.

Conservation efforts play a central role in the property’s ethos, with projects like coral reef restoration and initiatives to protect endangered sea turtles ensuring that tourism aligns with environmental stewardship.

Set in South Africa’s northern KwaZulu-Natal province, Jumeirah Thanda Safari immerses guests in one of the region’s exclusive Big Five game reserves.

Spanning 16,500 hectares, it offers a range of accommodations, including the Jumeirah Residences at the Royal Thanda Club, which provides access to a private 386-hectare wilderness area.

Guests can partake in guided game drives, bush walks, and stargazing sessions while learning about Zulu culture through curated programs.

These activities not only celebrate local heritage but also support socio-economic empowerment initiatives for the surrounding communities. The Royal Thanda Club, scheduled to open in December 2024, will also include luxury tented accommodations and a refurbished lodge by 2027.

Both properties reflect Jumeirah and Thanda Group’s commitment to sustainability. Jumeirah Thanda Safari actively supports anti-poaching initiatives, including Project Rhino KZN and the WWF Black Rhino Range Expansion Project. These programs aim to protect South Africa’s wildlife while promoting biodiversity.

Similarly, Jumeirah Thanda Island prioritizes marine conservation, with its coral reef restoration and sea turtle protection efforts showcasing a dedication to preserving marine ecosystems.

The partnership marks Jumeirah Group’s first foray into Africa, an increasingly important market in the global luxury travel industry.

With the continent’s tourism sector experiencing steady growth, these new ventures position Jumeirah as a key player in shaping Africa’s high-end travel offerings.

As part of Dubai Holding, Jumeirah Group has consistently delivered exceptional service across its 26 properties worldwide.

Known for landmarks like the Jumeirah Burj Al Arab in Dubai and the Carlton Tower in London, the group continues to set new standards in hospitality.
