Tunisia’s tourism revenues exceed US$2.2B, 10 million visitors expected- NTO

TUNISIAThe National Tourism Office (NTO) has revealed revenues from tourism have exceeded US$2.2 billion in 2024 and a record high of 20 million visitors are expected in the country by the end of the year.

The National Tourism Office reported that nearly 9.9 million tourists visited Tunisia by the end of November. The tourism sector plays a vital role in the country’s economy, accounting for 9% of GDP and providing jobs for 400,000 people.

According to the NTO, these statistics show Tunisia has emerged as a vibrant North African destination, blending Mediterranean charm with a rich historical and cultural heritage.

Known for its ancient ruins, pristine beaches, and distinctive Sahara experiences, the country has been actively revitalizing its tourism sector in recent years.

In 2023, Tunisia welcomed over 9.4 million international tourists, surpassing pre-pandemic numbers from 2019. This 18% year-on-year increase was attributed to enhanced connectivity, targeted marketing, and infrastructure improvements.

European travelers, particularly from France, Germany, and Italy, accounted for a significant share, while the government also focused on diversifying source markets, including efforts to attract visitors from Gulf countries and Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Tunisian National Tourism Office (NTO) launched the “Visit Tunisia 2025” strategy, which aims to position the country as a year-round destination.

The plan emphasizes sustainable tourism, with projects to promote eco-tourism, desert experiences, and cultural circuits, such as the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Carthage and Kairouan.

To further boost the sector, Tunisia invested in digital transformation, including an upgraded e-visa platform and interactive marketing campaigns across social media.

In collaboration with airlines, the government also introduced new direct routes connecting Tunis to key cities, such as Riyadh and Amsterdam.

Infrastructure upgrades have played a pivotal role, with the renovation of Enfidha and Monastir airports enhancing capacity.

In parallel, the NTO supported local businesses by offering grants to boutique hotels and encouraging agro-tourism projects in rural regions.

Tunisia’s efforts highlight its commitment to reinvigorating tourism as a pillar of economic growth. By balancing heritage preservation with innovation, the country is steadily carving a competitive niche in global tourism.
