Red Sea global and partners advocate for regenerative tourism

SAUDI ARABIA – In a recent collaboration, experts from Red Sea Global (RSG), King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), and Aptamind Partners have urged the tourism industry to embrace regenerative tourism as a solution to the mounting climate and biodiversity crises.

Their joint research highlights the need for tourism to actively restore and enhance ecosystems rather than simply aiming to minimize harm.

The paper, co-authored by marine sustainability expert Professor Carlos Duarte of KAUST, Aptamind CEO Aradhana Khowala, and RSG executives, emphasizes that the traditional sustainability model is no longer enough.

“Regenerative tourism is about building resilience—for businesses, communities, and the environment,” Professor Duarte explained.

This model aims to ensure destinations are left in better condition than when tourism began, aligning with global climate and biodiversity goals.

The research points out that tourism contributes 8–11% of global greenhouse gas emissions, underscoring its role in environmental degradation.

Regenerative tourism offers a net-positive approach, focusing on ecological restoration, community engagement, and resource efficiency to combat these challenges.

The paper outlines key areas where regenerative tourism can make a difference. It emphasizes the importance of engaging local communities in decision-making processes, ensuring that they benefit equitably from tourism activities.

This includes respecting cultural traditions, addressing social inequalities, and providing long-term economic opportunities, particularly for women and underserved groups.

Resource consumption also plays a central role in this vision. By reducing waste, supporting local suppliers, and adopting circular economies, tourism operators can contribute to a more responsible and regenerative industry.

Food systems are another critical focus, with the paper advocating for sustainable agricultural practices that support local farmers, minimize food waste, and reduce environmental impact.

Protecting biodiversity is integral to this model. The paper calls for efforts to restore habitats, promote responsible wildlife tourism, and reduce the ecological footprint of tourism developments.

Energy efficiency and the transition to renewable energy are also identified as essential steps toward achieving this vision.

RSG’s projects on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast are setting a benchmark for regenerative tourism. Initiatives include coral reef restoration, mangrove nurseries, and the development of eco-friendly infrastructure powered entirely by renewable energy.

These efforts combine technological innovation with community collaboration, creating a blueprint for sustainable and resilient tourism.

Aradhana Khowala emphasized the business case for regeneration, stating, “Tourism operators who invest in ecosystems and communities will not only meet global sustainability goals but also attract conscientious travelers and investors.”

Market trends reflect growing interest

The sustainable tourism market is expanding rapidly, with a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 23.8% from 2024 to 2034.

This growth is driven by increased traveler demand for eco-friendly options, particularly among younger demographics influenced by environmental awareness and social media.

The paper stresses the importance of measurable outcomes and transparent reporting. Dr. Maryam Ficociello, RSG’s Chief Governance Officer, remarked, “Governance must prioritize inclusivity, equity, and accountability. Regenerative tourism challenges us to redefine success—not as damage limitation but as creating tangible benefits for both people and the planet.”

The findings underscore the urgency of shifting to regenerative tourism and provide a roadmap for the industry to contribute meaningfully to global climate and biodiversity objectives.

As sustainable travel gains momentum, RSG’s initiatives highlight the transformative potential of this approach.
