DoorDash makes identity verification process more stringent for workers

USA – Food delivery platform Doordash has announced it is making its identity verification process for workers more stringent as a means of improving consumer and merchant peace of mind.

DoorDash is enhancing identity verification measures, requiring over 150,000 workers to confirm their identity weekly, with some needing verification between deliveries.

The initiative seeks to improve consumer and merchant safety and address account-sharing issues among drivers.

The company reported that the number of workers disqualified each month for failing identity checks has doubled compared to last year.

Brad Rosenthal, Director of Dasher Integrity at DoorDash, emphasized the importance of consumer trust, stating that people expect to know who is delivering their orders or entering their businesses.

The enhanced measures aim to block workers who have previously failed identity checks from rejoining the platform.

DoorDash currently prevents approximately 4,600 such attempts weekly.

To strengthen these safeguards, DoorDash is employing machine learning technology to flag suspicious accounts based on anomalous logins, repeated or inconsistent account details, and other unusual activity.

Accounts flagged by this system must undergo re-verification, and cases of failed verification are reviewed by human agents.

In addition to existing requirements—government identification and background checks—select workers will now complete real-time identity verification immediately after delivering orders.

DoorDash stated that introducing unpredictability into the process makes these safeguards harder to bypass.

The updated procedures are active in cities such as San Francisco, Orlando, Seattle, Los Angeles, Yakima, Denver, Boulder, Sacramento, Atlantic City, and Fort Myers. DoorDash plans to expand the requirements to more locations throughout 2025.

The company framed the measures as a response to growing challenges with account sharing among drivers.

However, it did not clarify how workers are selected for heightened scrutiny or address concerns about potential algorithmic bias in the process

DoorDash remains committed to ensuring platform integrity, stating that the new requirements will enhance safety for both customers and merchants while reducing attempts to circumvent identity verification.

These measures aim to provide greater transparency and accountability in the delivery process, aligning with the company’s broader focus on security and trust.
