Lesotho seeks investors for major MICE tourism development

LESOTHO – The Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC) is calling on investors to submit proposals for a transformative project to enhance the country’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector.

The ambitious plan includes the expansion of the Lesotho National Convention Centre in Maseru and the construction of a five-star hotel.

According to LTDC, these upgrades are essential for positioning Lesotho as a competitive destination for international events and business tourism.

“Maseru has shown strong growth in the MICE sector, hosting international meetings and events that significantly benefit the local economy. However, we recognize the need for upgraded facilities to fully meet the demands of this market,” the LTDC said in its announcement.

The proposed development will include a modernized convention facility capable of hosting 1,000 to 2,000 delegates.

Additionally, LTDC envisions a five-star hotel featuring over 100 rooms, including presidential and executive suites.

Other planned amenities include dining facilities, office spaces, and an indoor sports arena, ensuring the new facilities cater to both business and leisure travelers.

Interested investors must submit company profiles, a business concept, proof of financial capacity, and a plan for community engagement.

Proposals will undergo a rigorous selection process, including presentations to an adjudication panel before the final shortlist is determined. The deadline for submissions is December 19.

Tourism contributes approximately 7% to Lesotho’s GDP, providing over 34,000 jobs and drawing international visitors eager to explore the country’s rich cultural heritage and stunning mountain landscapes.

From hiking and skiing to cultural festivals, Lesotho offers diverse experiences that attract tourists while promoting sustainable practices.

The LTDC, established in 2002, has been instrumental in driving tourism growth through marketing initiatives, partnerships, and the promotion of cultural assets.

A recent report highlights steady growth in the sector, with tourist arrivals expected to rise annually by 4.4% until 2022.

Lesotho’s commitment to developing its tourism industry is evident in this new initiative, which builds on its already robust appeal as a destination for eco-tourism and cultural exploration.

The LTDC aims to attract both leisure and business travelers, boosting revenue and creating employment opportunities.

The ongoing investment in tourism infrastructure aligns with the country’s strategy to position itself as a premier destination in Southern Africa.

As LTDC remarked, “This project is not just about enhancing infrastructure but also about creating opportunities for local communities and showcasing the unique charm of Lesotho to the world.”
