UK – Danish espresso bar chain Hagen Espresso Bars has launched a next-generation espresso bar in London’s Mayfair.
The design of Hagen’s Mayfair store was a collaboration between founder Tim Schroeder and Munro, a Fitzrovia-based luxury hospitality design studio.
Inspired by Denmark’s Tivoli amusement park, the store’s interiors featured a red, green, and terracotta color scheme, evoking a warm, mid-20th-century ambiance.
The espresso bar was designed with limited seating, centering around a circular zinc counter that showcased the baristas’ skills, drawing parallels to high-end sushi restaurants and cocktail bars.
This Scandinavian-inspired setting was a defining aspect of the new concept.
Aligned with Hagen’s sustainability goals, the Mayfair store incorporated a low-emission electric Bellwether shop roaster for on-site roasting.
This addition reflected the company’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact.
The Mayfair outlet debuted just a few months after Hagen announced plans for a new café in downtown Bellevue, located at the Symetra Financial Center on 108th Avenue Northeast.
Scheduled to open on September 16, the Bellevue location was part of the company’s broader expansion strategy, which also included plans for a Kirkland café by fall 2024.
Maria Beck, the owner of Café Hagen, relocated to Seattle from Scandinavia with the vision of promoting the concept of hygge—emphasizing comfort and the enjoyment of simple pleasures.
This ethos was evident in Hagen’s offerings, which included specialty coffee and home-baked pastries served in an inviting atmosphere.
Hagen’s partnership with Bellwether, initiated in December 2023, aimed to reduce its carbon footprint. A Bellwether Series 2 roaster was already in use at the Belgravia location.
The Mayfair store, the largest and most advanced of Hagen’s 15 London sites, planned to introduce a roasting room by 2025, allowing customers to personalize their coffee’s flavor profile.
The Mayfair outlet also showcased unique blends, including a single-origin coffee from Hagen’s Himalayan project in Taplejung, Nepal.
Launched in 2019, this direct trade initiative supported 1,000 coffee farmers with training and tools to enhance their market access.
Founded in 2017, Hagen’s latest venture exemplified its Danish-inspired approach to specialty coffee and sustainable practices.
