DRC – Ethiopian Airlines has partnered with the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to officially launch Air Congo, a new airline aimed at improving regional connectivity and economic growth.
The collaboration gives the DRC government a majority 51% stake, while Ethiopian Airlines holds the remaining 49% and oversees the airline’s management.
Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew described the project as a milestone in their ongoing efforts to enhance air transport across Africa.
“This partnership with the DRC government brings improved connectivity to Central Africa, facilitating investment, trade, and tourism. Together, we aim to contribute to the socio-economic growth of the region,” Tasew said, expressing gratitude to all involved parties.
Air Congo’s operations have commenced with two Boeing 737-800 aircraft, serving domestic routes across seven key airports within the DRC.
Agreements covering aircraft leases, technical support, and systems implementation have already been signed.
Ethiopian Airlines will also play a pivotal role in workforce development by training Congolese nationals as pilots, cabin crew, and technical staff.
This initiative aligns with Ethiopian Airlines’ Vision 2035 strategy, which seeks to establish multiple aviation hubs across Africa.
Other successful partnerships include ASKY Airlines in Lomé, Malawi Airlines in Lilongwe, and Zambia Airways in Lusaka.
The establishment of Air Congo also holds promise for the DRC’s tourism sector, which has significant growth potential.
The country boasts a wealth of natural attractions, such as Virunga National Park, home to mountain gorillas, and the Okapi Wildlife Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Congo River offers opportunities for river expeditions, while the nation’s rich cultural heritage attracts visitors with traditional festivals and music.
Efforts are ongoing to modernize tourism infrastructure, including the construction of hotels and the rehabilitation of national parks.
In 2021, tourism contributed approximately US$107.70 million to the DRC’s economy, with the sector poised for further development through improved transportation networks.
This partnership sets a foundation for increased economic activity and regional integration, marking a significant step toward a more connected and prosperous Central Africa.
