KENYA – Virgin Limited Edition has announced a complete interior refurbishment of its luxury tented safari camp, Mahali Mzuri, in Kenya’s Maasai Mara, as part of its ongoing commitment to enhancing its award-winning collection of hotels and retreats.
The upcoming project will revamp 12 luxury tents and shared spaces, including the dining tent, bar, lounge, and a stunning swimming pool with direct views of the valley that forms part of the Great Wildebeest Migration route.
Collaborating with Lynne Hunt London, the redesign will offer a serene, immersive environment that enhances the guest experience by fostering a deeper connection to the natural surroundings.
While maintaining the camp’s iconic tented structures and strong Maasai cultural ties, the redesign will introduce a contemporary twist on African style.
Natural materials and an earthy color palette will dominate, complemented by vibrant red and black accents reminiscent of traditional Maasai attire.
The camp will also showcase a curated collection of contemporary artworks by local East African artists.
The individual tents, including a family tent, will feature spacious, open-plan suites with large wraparound windows and terraces, offering panoramic views that bring the outdoors inside.
Communal spaces, such as the open firepit area and bar, will remain central for guests to socialize after game drives or simply relax while observing wildlife in the valley.
Scheduled to reopen in June 2025, the newly redesigned camp will provide an ideal base for viewing the Great Migration, which takes place every year in July and August as wildebeest move from Loita Hills to the Serengeti.
The migration, a defining feature of the camp’s origins, was a key inspiration for its creation, driven by a desire to protect the land and route threatened by development.
Sustainability and community remain core to the camp’s ethos, with 80% of the staff coming from surrounding Maasai villages.
From the start, Mahali Mzuri has collaborated with local landowners and conservationists to protect wildlife and support local communities.
Notable initiatives include the development of a primary school for 300 children, funded by guest donations.
The camp operates sustainably, with a solar farm providing up to 100% renewable energy, a rainwater harvesting system, and a growing kitchen garden that supplies the chefs with home-grown produce.
