South Africa, Kenya reveal intrepid strategies to attract Chinese tourists

SOUTH AFRICA/KENYA – South Africa and Kenya have launched bold initiatives to tap into China’s rebounding outbound tourism market by streamlining visas and adopting progressive policies, aiming to attract millions of Chinese visitors.

South Africa’s Visa Overhaul Accelerates Growth

South Africa has recently revamped its visa process through the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS), a strategic initiative designed to ease travel for Chinese and Indian tourists.

Under this scheme, 65 pre-approved tour operators from South Africa, China, and India now handle group visa applications, reducing processing times to under 48 hours and relaxing certain visa requirements.

This streamlined approach is already bearing fruit; in 2024, the country welcomed over 41,000 Chinese visitors, an 11% increase from the previous year.

South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs, Leon Schreiber, indicated that removing these barriers would create jobs and stimulate economic growth, describing TTOS as a “game changer” destined to boost arrivals from both China and India.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Tourism, Patricia De Lille, highlighted the increasing interest among Chinese travelers, noting plans to expand TTOS to include between 150 and 200 approved tour operators by December, thereby enhancing accessibility further.

Kenya’s Bold Strategy for Chinese Tourism

In a parallel effort, Kenya is positioning itself as a top destination for Chinese tourists.

With an ambitious target of welcoming 5 million international visitors annually by 2027, Kenya is rolling out targeted strategies to enhance its appeal in China.

The numbers reflect this momentum: 80,000 Chinese tourists visited Kenya in 2024, a significant jump from 51,000 in 2023, driven by growing interest in its safaris, cultural heritage, and scenic landscapes.

James Mwaura, CEO of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, noted that improvements in tourism infrastructure and closer collaboration with Chinese travel agencies are key components of Kenya’s strategy.

As global competition for international travelers intensifies, Africa’s top tourist destinations are intensifying their focus on the Chinese market.

By streamlining visa processes, upgrading tourism infrastructure, and forging stronger industry partnerships, countries such as South Africa and Kenya are poised to capitalize on the rising trend of outbound travel from China.

Continued investments and innovative initiatives are expected to make Africa an even more attractive destination for Chinese visitors, promoting economic growth and fostering richer cross-cultural exchanges.
