TANZANIA – Serengeti Balloon Safaris has appointed Roy Mushobozi as its first Sustainability Manager, reinforcing its commitment to responsible tourism and industry-wide positive impact.
Since its inception, SBS has consistently aimed to maintain the lightest possible environmental footprint while creating a meaningful impact for both its passengers and the communities it operates within.
This commitment extends not only to delivering exceptional experiences for customers but also to fostering a positive working environment for staff and contributing to the well-being of neighboring communities.
To further advance this mission, SBS has appointed Roy to spearhead its sustainability initiatives.
Roy brings extensive experience in sustainability and development, having previously served as the program manager for the NGO Sunrise of Life Canada in Tanzania, where he played a key role in implementing multiple impactful programs.
Prior to this, he was the Partnerships and Innovation Manager for VSO in Tanzania. His tenure at Raleigh International saw him leading the planning, organization, and execution of the UK government-funded International Citizen Service Entrepreneur (ICSE) program in Tanzania.
Managing Director John Corse expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment, stating that Roy’s extensive experience in the sustainability sector would be invaluable in helping SBS drive forward new and innovative processes, not only within the company but also across the wider tourism industry in Tanzania.
He emphasized that the company’s goal was to create lasting, positive change in ballooning and beyond, leaving behind a legacy they could be truly proud of.
SBS remains committed to sustainability through several initiatives. The company holds Travelife accreditation, undergoing regular audits to ensure best practices are embedded in its daily operations.
It also supports the Serengeti De-snaring Project by contributing over US$9,000 per year to help combat bushmeat poaching within the Serengeti National Park.
In addition, SBS offsets all emissions produced by its balloons and vehicles, as well as any emissions from international business flights, through Carbon Tanzania.
In 2023, this amounted to over US$10,000, funding biodiversity restoration in Tanzania.
Community engagement is another key pillar of SBS’s sustainability strategy, with the company supporting local initiatives like Legends Youth Basketball in Arusha, providing over 150 young athletes with team sponsorships, sports kits, and opportunities to compete.
By integrating these initiatives into its business model, SBS continues to redefine sustainable tourism while ensuring a positive impact on Tanzania’s environment and communities.
